"Maghar, Maghar, wake up !!"
"What is it, Baz? For blasted... I was tryin' to sleep here. Can't this wait until morning? Damn near fell off my chair!"
"Well, I uh.. I was just listening to old man Jaechem tellin' a tale, and uh, well, he passed out drunk, right off his stool."
"What's so strange about that? He's old, can't handle near as much as he used to. In fact, that's a good reason to leave a man sleepin', if you get my idea..."
"He only did it when I kept asking what a Blue Frenzy is! I was hoping you knew too, you usually know all about that sorta stuff. He kept talking about it, but wouldn't say what one is!"
"Well, I, uh... Yeah, I seem to remember something about that. Let me just get comfortable again and I'll start... grmph.. pffff.. grrrroan..."
"Not you now !!" |

"I'll be tellin' ye a story now, lad, since you seem so damned eager to be hear'n one. It is all about when I was a young gipper like you, back before I washed outta the free trade business and moved on to diggin' ditches, then graves. I used tae be a riverboat steam cap'n, and sometimes got payed to go on some weird trips."
"This one time, we're headed up t'e Black River when our ben'factor suggests we stop t'e night, and aye, we did it. But we shoulda been knowin' better. T'at night, sure as blue frenzy, we wake up to a buzzin' like ye never 'magine! It was nae loud, it was riotous. Burned inta our ears, tore at t'e men's minds. We woke tae find big, hot red bugs stuffed in our furnace, makin' a racket."
"So t'is crazy rich guy whose-had payed us picks up some tongs and pulls one'a the damn t'ings out! T'en it's on me like blue frenzy! And we're fighting, it tryin' to stick its stinger inta me, and me trying to get it overboard by tongpoint. Sure as hell, t'e Jeeber almost got me belly once or twice but we managed t'a get its fire out in quick time..."
"What's a blue frenzy, ye ask? Well, been a long time since I seen one'a dem. Well, they're about as around big as a-... No, that wouldn't mean anythin' to ya. They're the colour of-... No, you wouldn't have seen one of t'em eit'er. Well, they're real mean for one, and they look kinda like a... Hrmph... ugh... snrt... *thump*."

So much for going to the source. That's all the old man could get out, and that brings up the question of how big it was, or how it got to be so damned mean in the first place. Not to even mention what it looked like! I need to know what it eats, where it sleeps, how it gets around! Wait... What about you? Think you might be up to the job?
For a man or woman brave enough to go on the journey, the Blue Frenzy can't be difficult to find. Most often in the regions around Corvis, they're not known for hiding. I've never seen one myself, but then, everyone describes each a little differently and I may have without realizing it. This can make it a little difficult to identify one. But don't distress my friends and fellow ecologists, as there is an answer and an opportunity to be had!
I have in my hands a copy of a rare and informative book, strange and filled with lore about many things within our kingdoms and our neighbors. It positively stinks of machine oil, and when holding it, the sound of clicking calculating machines can be heard in the back of your mind... The book is entitled Liber Mechanika, and within its covers is most assuredly the mark and sigils of its author: the honorable Rob Baxter; and a most inspired artist, one Brian of Snoddy. Being truthful, this book is looking for a new home as I have two of them. One is all my lodgings can handle the weight of bearing; all that loose iron and cortex pulls down its pages with mighty strength. In fact, it would be disastrous as I can barely lift one by itself!
I can only hope, my friends, that you will feel inspired and help me in my mission. I seek these creatures, and all like them for my collection... For the one willing to help me, and provide the best tells of the creature, I will part with this spare tome. I will even reproduce your words so that all might read them in my next printing! I print in hopes of enlightening, teaching, spreading the word, and seeing to it that truth be known by all. There are sure to be many such creatures under my press, and onto pages; perhaps yours will be one of the first.
Yours in confidence,
Vincent Penbrooke
