The Grapes of Wrath!

Pitch

The invasion of Llael has upset many people, and in bars and taverns all over Corvis gangs of Llaelese refugees have been drinking too much and becoming exceedingly violent towards anyone of Khardic or Umbrean heritage. They also become violent towards any Cygnarans who do not assist them in their persecution.

Player Characters of Llaelese heritage who visit taverns may find themselves acting irrationally, especially around those of Khardic or Umbrean background, even if those persons are their friends...

Alternatives

  • Rumour has began to circulate, of Khardic sorcerers infiltrating public drinking houses and controlling people's minds. Despite the absurdity of this, sorcerers (and hence bards, gun-mages, and to some extent wizards) are coming under attack from mobs in the street.
Despite the absurdity of the rumour, it is also true! Maximilo is a Khadoran sorcerer with mixed Ordic blood, and he is in Corvis posing as a wealthy count just arrived in the city with a fortune in money to recruit a private mercenary force to go into Llael.
After signing on a swag of people, including many Llaelese, he orders rounds on the house, and during the night 'shouts' the Llaelese to mugs of his 'special reserve' - which is the material component for his own form of charm person spell that provokes the irrational violence that has been occurring - basically once someone starts fighting they cannot stop until unconscious or dead!
Anyone who tries to get a mug of the special-reserve is brushed off (unless they are Llaelese), and if they persist Maximilo will grudgingly ask them to help carry in a few extra barrels from his wagon - at which time he will try to ambush them, or escape.
Once his plan is made public he will disguise himself as a Llaelese refugee and try and get close enough to whoever has ruined his fun.
  • The invasion of Llael has stopped the supply of Llaelese boutique wines to Cygnar, which has upset many people - including a Cask Imp named 'Xwiciz' in Corvis.
A connoisseur of fine wine, Xwiciz knows nothing of human politics, but has decided that he has to get the wine flowing again, even if people get hurt...
As the supply of wine dwindles, Xwiciz has become even more desperate, and has even swayed several military commanders to issue drunken orders for short-lived 'invasions of Khador'. These drunken antics in Corvis are short lived, so Xwiciz has decided to take his cause to the front line, in the hope of starting a war!
Detecting a Cask Imp once you know what to look for is fairly easy, but catching one isn't. The person in town with the best reputation for dealing with such creatures is Phineas the Rat Catcher (see the Quad Divas publication, from Buccaneer Bass). To do the job Phineas will want the Player Characters to first go into the sewers and slay a giant 'undead rat' that was spawned by the Witchfire, and then they will have to help Phineas by 'holding the cask-imp down', while Phineas performs the proper rituals of 'exorcism'.
  • The Llaelese in Corvis have banded together and formed a vigilante group, with the aim of provoking violence against anyone of Khardic origin or sympathy (or even Umbrean).
They have circulated wild stories about Cask Imps and Khardic sorcerers, but they truth is that they are just using such things as a smokescreen for their deliberate violence.
If unchecked, people will die and eventually the gang will begin to prey on the citizens of Corvis to 'fund their return' to Llael.
The leader of the gang is a secretive gunmage/warbard called Gwynolyn, who used to be in Arcane Tempest until thrown out for insubordination - in fact Arcane Tempest members may also get involved in the matter in an undercover fashion, although as natural spellcasters they will only confuse the matter, by appearing to be the 'skulking sorerers' the Llaelese are warning people about.
