On a cold, rainy evening the characters encounter a small child all alone on the road.  In her tiny hands she's holding a teddy bear. Traces of blood can be found on the cuddly toy.

Alternatives

• The girl's father is a violent drunk. This morning he returned home, drunk as usual, and started beating up his wife. The girl's mother attempted to protect her and was beaten to near unconsciousness. The father then went to bed to sleep off his hangover. The girl attempted to comfort her mother by wiping the teddy bear over her beaten features. When her mother didn't react, she ran out in search of help.
• The girl is the daughter of a local woodsman. As her parents are out all day working, she spends the days wandering the forest with her only (imaginary) friend, the dragon Ragesh. When the characters find her, she claims she followed a dragon here, but now he has disappeared. The blood on the teddy bear is her own. While running, she fell in some brambles and wiped off the blood with her bear.
• The girl lives in a nearby small hamlet. The hamlet was overrun by a Black Ogrun mercenary band. Her parents hid her in the closet and were slain. She tried to wake them up and ended up with blood on
